Island travel tips for Lombok and beyond

Ferry guides, harbour advice, and destination inspiration for travelling by sea between Bali, Lombok, the Gili Islands, and Sumbawa.

Choosing the right harbour in Bali

Padang Bai offers the shortest crossing and the most operators, but requires a longer drive from the south. Serangan is far more convenient from Kuta, Seminyak, or the airport — the trade-off is a longer time at sea. Match the harbour to where you are staying, not just the crossing time.

Bangsal vs. fast boat direct to the Gilis

If you are already on Lombok, public boats from Bangsal are the standard hop to the Gilis. Coming from Bali, a direct fast boat saves you the overland journey across Lombok entirely — just check which island each service calls at.

Travelling with a motorbike or car

Fast boats carry passengers only. To bring a vehicle between Bali and Lombok you need the Padang Bai–Lembar public ferry; for Lombok to Sumbawa, the Labuhan Lombok–Poto Tano crossing. Buy tickets at the harbour and arrive early in peak season.

Sea conditions and the wet season

Crossings are smoothest in the dry season (roughly April to October). During the wet season, swells can delay or cancel fast boats — public ferries are more resilient. Build flexibility into itineraries between November and March.

Check-in and what to bring

Fast boat operators usually ask you to check in 30–60 minutes before departure. Keep your ticket or voucher accessible, pack valuables in a waterproof bag, and be ready to wade through shallow water when boarding at beach stops like the Gilis.

Onward travel across the archipelago

Lombok sits at the heart of a classic overland-sea route: Bali → Lombok (fast boat or Lembar ferry) → Sumbawa (Poto Tano ferry) → Bima → Flores. Each leg is a separate ticket — treat LombokHarbour.com as your planning map for the journey east.
